In his day, Johannes Friedrich August Von Esmarch (1823-1908), was a
leading authority on gunshot wounds. In addition to other significant
contrubutions to trauma medicine, Esmarch developed these
illustrated triangular bandages intended to be on the spot medical
resources for the untrained. These bandages were well received and used
extensively. For many years triangular bandages, whether illustrated or
not, were know as Esmarch bandages. Now, asking for an Esmarch bandage
at the drug store, will probably only draw blank looks from the
clerk. How fleeting is fame!
